The medium-bodied Caillard Mataro 2015 is all about freshness, fine lacy structure, pure fruit flavours and underlying savoury oak complexity. Elegantly proportioned and finely balanced, it has the featherweight suppleness of pinot noir yet the persistency and drive of a claret style. The late-ripening mataro, also known as mourvèdre, was first brought out to Australia in 1832, is superbly suited to Australian conditions. Inspired by his research for the collectors bible Penfolds Rewards of Patience, Andrew Caillard (Australian Master of Wine) sought to make a mataro that would reflect the ambitions of our 19th Century vignerons, yet offer wine drinkers something that was familiar yet different and delicious to drink from the mainstream of the Barossa.
