Five festive cocktails

This year, why not play mixologist and welcome guests with a festive aperitif

1. Old Fashioned

Classic cocktail combining a heady Kentucky whiskey and citrus flavours.

Ingredients | Serves: makes one Old Fashioned

  • 60ml whiskey

  • 15ml simple sugar syrup

  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters

  • Slice of orange or orange skin

  • Dark maraschino cherry

  • Ice

Method

Half fill a tumbler with ice. Pour over whiskey. Add sugar syrup and bitters. Lastly, stir and garnish with an orange twist and a maraschino cherry.

2. Aperol Spritz

Fabulously festive and so easy to make, start your celebrations with a Spritz!

Ingredients

  • Ice

  • 50ml Aperol

  • 75ml Sensi Dry Prosecco

  • 25ml Soda water

  • 1 orange, sliced

Method

An Aperol Spritz is made using a 3-2-1 ratio. Fill a large wine glass with plenty of ice, add Prosecco, then Aperol. Top with soda water, stir and garnish with an orange slice and a paper straw.

3. Margarita

Refreshing summer drink thanks to its combination of lime, salt and tequila.

Ingredients | Serves: Makes one Margarita

  • Ice

  • 50ml tequila

  • 25ml lime juice

  • 20ml triple sec or Cointreau

  • Sea salt and lime wedges to garnish

Method

Sprinkle a tbs of salt onto a small plate. Rub the rim of a cocktail glass with a wedge of lime and then dip and twist the rim of the glass into the salt. Fill a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice, then add the tequila, lime juice and triple sec or Cointreau. Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker feels cold and strain the mixture from the shaker into the prepared glass.

4. Sangria

Some celebrations call for a jug of Sangria! This is an easy, make-ahead-of-time, cocktail.

Ingredients | Serves: 6-8 glasses

  • 1 bottle red wine or non alcoholic sparkling red

  • 1 cup of orange juice

  • ½ cup brandy

  • 1/4 cup caster sugar

  • 1 orange and 1 apple, sliced

  • 1 cup blueberries

  • 1 cup sliced strawberries

  • 275ml soda water

Method

In a large glass jug, add wine, orange juice, brandy, and sugar, stir. Add orange and apple slices, blueberries and strawberries. Cover and refrigerate for a couple of hours and then top with soda water and stir again before serving.

5. Vodka or Gin Martini 

Shaken or stirred, a vodka or gin martini is an elegant and bold aperitif.

Ingredients | Serves: makes one martini

  • Ice

  • 50ml dry gin or 50ml vodka

  • 1 teaspoon dry vermouth

  • Green olives or lemon or orange peel to garnish

  • Toothpick for the olives

Method

Place a martini glass in the fridge to chill for 10-minutes. For a stirred martini - Pour the gin or vodka, and the vermouth into a tall glass, filled with ice cubes. Stir the mixture with a spoon until the outside of the mixing glass is very cold and the drink is well mixed, taste. For a shaken martini - Add a handful of ice to a cocktail shaker, pour in the gin or vodka, add the vermouth and shake until the cocktail shaker is cold. Strain the martini into your chilled martini glass and serve with olives or a strip of citrus skin
