Summer cocktails fit for celebration

Summer means celebration, so as the temperature climbs and the days get longer take time to enjoy the holidays with friends and family. This year, why not play mixologist and welcome guests with a festive aperitif.

Aperol Spritz cocktail recipe

The Aperol Spritz is synonymous with summer. Fabulously festive and so easy to make, start your celebrations with a Spritz!

Ingredients

  • Ice

  • 50ml Aperol we suggest Aperol Spritz Triple Pack

  • 75ml Sensi Dry Prosecco in the Aperol Spritz Triple Pack

  • 25ml Soda water

  • 1 orange, sliced

Serves: Makes one Spritz

Method

  • An Aperol Spritz is made using a 3-2-1 ratio

  • Fill a large wine glass with plenty of ice, add Prosecco, then Aperol 

  • Top with soda water, stir 

  • Garnish with an orange slice and a paper straw. Enjoy!

Margarita cocktail recipe

Perfect by the pool, as an accompaniment to a barbecued meal, or as an aperitif when entertaining a crowd, the margarita is a much-loved celebratory summer drink thanks to its refreshing combination of lime, salt and tequila.

Ingredients | Serves: Makes one Margarita

  • Ice

  • 50ml tequila

  • 25ml lime juice

  • 20ml triple sec or Cointreau

  • Sea salt and lime wedges to garnish

Method

  • Sprinkle a tbs of salt onto a small plate.

  • Rub the rim of a cocktail glass with a wedge of lime and

then dip and twist the rim of the glass into the salt.

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice, then add

the tequila, lime juice and triple sec or Cointreau.

  • Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker feels cold

and strain the mixture from the shaker into the prepared glass

Sangria cocktail recipe

A pretty, ruby red cocktail fit for a crowd, some celebrations call for a jug of Sangria! The heady combination of red wine and brandy enhanced by colourful summer fruits, make this an easy, make-ahead-of-time, cocktail that your guests are sure to love.

Ingredients | Serves: 6-8 glasses

  • 1 bottle red wine or non alcoholic sparkling red

  • 1 cup of orange juice

  • ½ cup brandy

  • 1/4 cup caster sugar

  • 1 orange and 1 apple, sliced

  • 1 cup blueberries

  • 1 cup sliced strawberries

  • 275ml soda water

Method

  • In a large glass jug, add wine, orange juice, brandy, and sugar, stir

  • Add orange and apple slices, blueberries and strawberries

  • Cover and refrigerate for a couple of hours

  • Top with soda water and stir again before serving.

Vodka or Gin Martini cocktail recipe

Shaken or stirred, a vodka or gin martini is an elegant and bold aperitif to serve your guests. Ask your guest to guide the choice of garnish, will they choose a trio of green olives? Or a twist of citrus to add to the theatre of this classic cocktail.

Ingredients | Serves: makes one martini

  • Ice

  • 50ml dry gin or 50ml vodka

  • 1 teaspoon dry vermouth

  • Green olives or lemon or orange peel to garnish

  • Toothpick for the olives

Method

  • Place a martini glass in the fridge to chill for 10-minutes

  • For a stirred martini - Pour the gin or vodka, and the vermouth

into a tall glass, filled with ice cubes

  • Stir the mixture with a spoon until the outside

of the mixing glass is very cold and the drink is well mixed, taste

  • For a shaken martini - Add a handful of ice to a cocktail shaker,

pour in the gin or vodka, add the vermouth and shake until the

cocktail shaker is cold

  • Strain the martini into your chilled martini glass and serve

with olives or a strip of citrus skin

Old Fashioned cocktail recipe

  • 60ml whiskey

  • 15ml simple sugar syrup

  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters

  • Slice of orange or orange skin

  • Dark maraschino cherry

  • Ice

Method

  • Half fill a tumbler with ice

  • Pour over whiskey

  • Add sugar syrup and bitters

  • Stir and garnish with an orange twist and a maraschino cherry
