The ATR Wines Hard Hill Road Tannat 2020 features Dark cherry and violets are the first flavours in a kaleidoscope of characters in this unique wine. This obscure variety piqued my interest after tasting the dense and intense wines of Madiran, France, the home of the Tannat variety.

Region

Grampians

Size

750ml

Wine Style

Red - big, bold, full-bodied

Palate

Although traditionally known for its big tannins, this Hard Hill Road Tannat is a restrained version. Presenting as a full-bodied rich wine, the fine, almost metallic tannins, paired with an intense fruit-bomb palate and persistent and cleansing finish, all come together to create an elegant wine.

Vintage

2020

Food Pairing

Duck confit and potatoes

”Tannic and with marked acidity, tannat is not your warm and cuddly variety. With some deep winemaking love, Adam Richardson has turned the grape around into an attractive, fragrant and spice-laden wine that remains solid in all the right areas, as it should. Lifted perfume in red and black fruits, anise, bay leaf, fennel with some smoked charcuterie complexity. Love the dark cherry freshness on the palate laced with pepper and framed in spices. Firm, sturdy tannins bring it home. A long life beckons.”
