Tahbilks history with Marsanne can be traced back to the 1860s when White Hermitage cuttings were sourced from St Huberts Vineyard in Victorias Yarra Valley. The grape in fact was Marsanne and although none of these original plantings have survived, the Estate still has the worlds largest single holding of the varietal and produces Marsanne from vines established in 1927, which are amongst the oldest in the world. Cutting the canes and allowing the fruit to hang prior to harvest concentrates the flavours and sugars, producing a luscious wine when made.
The Tahbilk Museum Release Marsanne 2017 features aromas of aged Marsanne toast and honeysuckle characters with hints of marzipan. The palate exhibits flavours of youthful lemon and lime fruits together with lanolin notes on a deliciously clean finish. Given the character and complexity that comes with time in the bottle, small quantities of Marsanne are mindfully cellared at Tahbilk prior to being re-released under a distinctive ‘Museum Release’ label.
Established in 1860, and purchased by the Purbrick family in 1925, Tahbilk is located in the premium central Victorian viticultural region of Nagambie Lakes. One of the world’s rarest grape varieties, with its origins in the Northern Rhone and Hermitage regions of France, Tahbilk’s history with Marsanne can be traced back to the 1860’s when White Hermitage cuttings were sourced from ‘St Huberts’ Vineyard in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Tahbilk Marsanne has a dedicated global following due to its thrilling character and appeal as a young wine with intense lemon, citrus and tropical fruits on a crisp mineral edged finish with a proven ability to develop added complexity and character if cellared.
Produced from the Estates 1927 planted Marsanne vines some of the oldest in the world. The fruit is harvested early at high natural acid levels, no chemicals are added and the juice becomes fully oxidised. The clean juice is then fermented at 11 to 15C with the resultant wine water white, with high acid and flavourless. The wine is bottled and then the magic happens. It evolves into a wonderful, textural, mineral wine ... its a classic ugly duckling to beautiful swan story. Alister Purbrick ~ Winemaker & 4th Generation.
A seamless textural wine with notes of spice and ginger, rose petal florals and lifted citrus fruits. The palate has persistent lemon zest and stone fruits with a delicious mineral edge. Further complexity will be realised with medium-term cellaring of between six to eight years from vintage.
