Adequate winter and spring rainfalls set the wines up to burst into life and sustain beautifully balanced growth throughout the summer. Autumn was ideal with little rainfall and warm conditions to ensure the grapes matured gracefully.

Bests Great Western Riesling 2024

Riesling vines from Great Western produce elegant, flavoursome and age-worthy Rieslings which stand alongside some of the most outstanding examples of the variety in Australia. In recent times, the style has evolved to match the continental climatic conditions to a beautifully balanced wine with texture and aromatics. The climate and soils in the Grampians wine region suit the Riesling variety perfectly. Our cool, continental location makes for very cold winters and strong diurnal (daily) temperature shifts during the growing season. This ensures full ripeness and plenty of natural acidity in the grapes. The Riesling at Best's has a proven ability to mature gracefully for 20 years or more. This example is no exception and its youthful freshness is a good sign for its long life in the cellar. It will gather complex toasty aromas and flavours as the years pass.

Bests Hamill Shiraz 2020

Hamill tells a multigeneration story of the Thomson family, beginning with Emily Grace Hamill, who married Fredrick Thomson. Emily was instrumental in the success of the Thomson family and enabled the family to purchase Best’s. The name Hamill has been handed down through 3 generations and resides with Ben Hamill Thomson whose leadership led to the purchasing of the Sugarloaf Vineyard. This wine is produced from this premium vineyard, which is situated amongst the rolling hills surrounding The Black Range.

This wine was first made in 1992, one hundred years after the Thomson family settled in the area. Thomson Family Shiraz is meticulously hand-harvested, hand plunged and fermented in small open fermenters. Aged in 20% new French oak and aged in Best’s underground cellars for 14 months. The Thomson Family Shiraz was elevated to the highest and rarest Langton’s Classification of “1st Classified” in the 2024 Classification VIII.
