Henschke The Wheelwright Shiraz 2021

The Wheelwright, first released to commemorate 150 years of Henschke family winemaking, pays tribute to our founder, winemaker Johann Christian Henschke (1803-1873). He was among the first generation of the early German Silesian community of the Barossa in South Australia and established the family winery in 1868. Johann Christian arrived in 1841 as a skilled stonemason and wheelwright and planted his first vineyards in the high country of the picturesque Eden Valley. This wine is produced from old vine shiraz planted in 1968, a century later, by fourth-generation Cyril Henschke near the village of Eden Valley at 470m altitude. As per the Barossa Old Vine Charter, an ‘old vine’ is equal to or greater than 35 years of age.

Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz 2021 (Gift Boxed)

Shiraz from pre-phylloxera material brought from Europe in the mid-1800s and grown on the Henschke Hill of Grace Vineyard in the Eden Valley wine region, managed with organic and biodynamic practices. Matured in 13% new and 87% seasoned (84% French, 16% American) oak hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling.

Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz 2021 (Gift Box)

The beautiful and historic name Mount Edelstone is a translation from the German Edelstein meaning ‘gemstone’, a reference to the small yellow opals once found in the area. The Mount Edelstone Vineyard was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas who founded The South Australian Company and played a significant role in the formation and establishment of South Australia. Unusual for its time, the vineyard was planted solely to shiraz. The ancient 500-million-year-old geology in the vineyard has given rise to soils that are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from the dry-grown, un-grafted centenarian vines. The wine was first bottled as a single-vineyard shiraz in 1952 by fourth-generation Cyril Henschke.

Henschke Cyril Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

99% cabernet sauvignon and 1% merlot grown on the Cyril Henschke Vineyard on the Henschke Eden Valley property, managed with organic and biodynamic practices. Matured in 8% new and 92% seasoned French oak hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. This wine carries the name of Stephen's father, fourth- generation Henschke winemaker, Cyril Henschke (1924-1979); a tribute to one of Australia's outstanding winemaking pioneers, who was renowned for old-vine, single-vineyard and quality varietal table wines. Cyril planted cabernet sauvignon at the Henschke Eden Valley property in the late 1960s. The cabernet sauvignon vines, along with cabernet franc and merlot, are planted on a north facing slope, and are managed with organic and biodynamic practices. First produced as a single-vineyard wine in 1978, Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon celebrates the incredible beauty that emerges from the vibrant rows of this Eden Valley vineyard, revered for its texture, depth, complexity and fine-grained tannins.

Henschke Keyneton Euphonium 2021

Keyneton Euphonium is a beautiful compisition of shiraz from up to 50-year-old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa Valleys, blended with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot from selected vineyards in both regions. 

Henschke Johann's Garden Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2022

Named as a tribute to the early Silesian community of the Barossa, many of whom carried the first name of Johann. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed rejoiced in the riches of their prudent efforts. This blend is just one of those blessings. The traditions and culture have survived to this day, including the traditional winemaking techniques of open-top fermentation used in this grenache blend. It is produced from low-yielding Barossa Survivor Vines, categorised by the Barossa Old Vine Charter as vines that are equal or greater than 70 years old. These gnarled, dry-grown bush and trellised vines are grown on limestone soils from selected vineyards in the Barossa Valley. Barossa growers traditionally referred to their vineyard as their ‘garden’, from the German weingarten.
