‘Stonefire’ is a tribute to the mother rock sitting underneath the Alkina Estate vineyard. The Barossa’s Western Ridge features a lot of the metamorphic rock, schist, which you also famously find in the Rhone Valley, Priorat, Central Otago and South Africa. Alkina thinks of it as a ‘fire’ rock with the capacity to bring great energy to a wine but also heat if not carefully managed in the vineyard and winery. Grey blue in colour, in certain parts of their vineyard, it has degraded naturally and mixed with iron oxide to leave a firey-red clay. A perfect balance of layered ripe fruit flavours from the excellent 2024 season combined with the textural, savoury and mineral qualities that Alkina is known for.
