The Pettigala Single Vineyard Shiraz comes from the highest shiraz vineyard on the Coriole estate - a 1967 planting on the contour hill. Each row is planted on a small terrace which makes mechanisation of the block impossible - everything is done by hand. The vineyard is quite low yielding at 1-2 tonnes per acre, and is typically the most fragrant, spicy and perfumed out of the Coriole estate shiraz blocks. The name "Pettigala" comes from the Pettigala area in Sri Lanka, home to tea production and spice farming. When this wine showed its characters, Coriole had to name it as their own "spice mountain”.

”From a '67 vineyard planted across contour rows on a hillside behind the winery; 18 months in French oak (20% new). While the Soloist offers more breadth and overt fruitfulness, the Pettigala (this edition at least) has a calmer refinement, albeit with depth and intensity. Subtle layers of spice – clove, cardamom, black tea leaves – play across blackberry, wild raspberry, cherry and iron-like minerals. Impeccably composed and refined, this tracks long with finely etched linear tannins and a burst of red fruit to close. ”
