Antonio Fattori, who runs the 95 hectare property, comes from a family of winemakers. With over a century of history behind them, Antonio Fattori and his brother Giovanni took over the family business in the early ’70s. Prior to that, the estate produced well-made base wines that were sold to neighbouring properties to be used under varied labels. In the early ’90s Antonio made the decision to produce his own wine with his own label and begin to place the wines into the international market. Antonio’s pursuit of excellence is illustrated by his use of two separate production facilities to best manage the journey of both whites and reds. Col de la Bastia is the vineyard name given to 12 hectares of terraced land situated on the most eastern side of the Valpolicella appellation at 420m above sea level. It sits in between the Val d’Alpone and the Val d’Illasi, overlooking at the Castelcerino village. The vineyard soils contain limestone and shaley clay soils. The area takes the name Col de la Bastia from a medieval Watchtower, the remains of which can be found in the woodland above the vineyards. Antonio believes that the location of the high altitude location of the Col de La Bastia vineyard provides the ideal site of which to produce wines from the indigenous Valpolicella varieties – Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella. The Fattori red wines from this vineyard show an elegance & structured acidity that sets them apart from almost any other producer in the region.
