A young Haunold grew into a huge giant after drinking from a miraculous spring within the Dolomites. When threatened with invasion, the villagers pleaded to the giant for help. In exchange, Haunold demanded one calf, three bushels of beans and one barrel of wine per day! Not being able to maintain these payments, the villagers set a trap and captured him. As the legend goes, the giant Haunold still sleeps, imprisoned in the mountain that still bears his name.
