William Patrick Auld (WP) was the second generation of the Auld family to influence the early Australian Wine Industry. He was also a surveyor and a part of the expedition that successfully crossed Australia from South to North for the first time, riding his trusty steed, Wilberforce. It is said that a man’s best friend is his dog, but Wilberforce was WP’s best friend, a 17 hand, muscular, dark brown stallion who allowed only WP to ride him. Descended from the original English horses brought to New South Wales by the first settlers, Wilberforce was a Waler. The Waler developed into a hardy horse with great endurance and stamina even under extreme stress from lack of food and water. Wilberforce could walk, trot, canter and jump all day without tiring, even in Australia’s challenging climatic and physical conditions, making him the perfect companion on the South to North crossing. Wilberforce served William Patrick Auld for 37 years, an amazing career for a horse. Celebrate the animal in your life with a glass from the Wilberforce range.
